Ian’s Shoelace Site – so much genius for such a humble thread

iansshoelacesite

It can be hard sometimes to remember what life as a human is really like, what with all the doom, gloom, crazy and so forth that we face on a day to day basis. But then, just when you think it’s all but done, you stumble across a small place off the beaten track which restores your faith in our ability to survive despite the odds.

Ian’s Shoelace Site is clearly not the site of a madman, therefore it must be from a genius. Ian Fieggen has used his techie skills to craft an old school site which focuses on the massively important topic of tying shoe laces, and when we say focus we mean exactly that.

This is not some trivial little exercise in whimsy, it’s a full blown encyclopedia on the art and science of ensuring your boots stay on your feet. The 37 main methods of lacing featured on the site are intricately detailed with graphical walk-throughs, and you also receive more information about the whole lacey universe than you’d ever think to even ask.

The site also features the Ian Knot, invented by the man himself and which is apparently the fastest shoe tying knot in existence. From loose to tied in 3 seconds. Astounding stuff.

Did you know there are more than 2 trillion ways of feeding a lace through six pairs of eyelets? Sometimes we love the Internet so much it hurts!

  • I've learned to tie my shoes with Ian's know… ooh, about a year now?.. I haven't look back.

But clearly I'm missing something, because I still can't tie as fast as on that video. My initial knot is still tied the "slow" way.
