We’ve seen some 3D printed homes before. They’re quite small but they make perfect low-cost places to live for many people. ICON is hoping to bring this model of building to more people as a sustainable alternative to building in underserved areas.
The company is using the Vulcan printer and cement to make homes. The buildings they create are more traditional and can be up to 800 square including a living room, bathroom, and bedroom as well as a cute wrap around porch. They go up in 12 to 24 hours. They’re very homey and could be amazing for people who need them.
Still the price of these is quite high at currently $10,000 per home. Much cheaper than a traditional home, sure, and they’re working to bring the cost down to $4,000 per home which would be a major improvement. That being said, it’s still very costly if their goal is to provide housing to vulnerable communities. Even so, this is a step in the right direction.
