iPassport – keep your identity safe with this RFID case

ipassport

Wireless, contactless, touchless, whatever you want to call it, the new convenience tech is starting to take off in a big way. In London, contactless cards now account for around 100,000 transactions a day on London transport services, and they’re starting to really take off in stores with most stores now featuring ‘tap & pay’ terminals of one sort or another. But with the convenience, as with everything else, comes risk.

The RFID chip technology these products and services rely on can be intercepted at short range, and unless you’re careful it can be done so secretly that you’ll never know, until you get a shock in your next bill or statement. With RFID passports, the risk of ID theft is similarly disturbing. Which is where this new iPassport product comes in.

The new biometric case for your passport is made of carbon fiber, and will only open if the owner presents their fingerprint on the the front panel. The case also shields against unauthorized RFID sniffing and it also features a Bluetooth enabled alarm system, which sounds an alert if the case and your phone become separated. Nice for making sure you don’t leave one or other on that cafe table.

The product runs off a USB rechargeable lithium battery which runs for around a month per charge, and will be available in March for a price of $599.

  • Yeah, with a price tag like that. Probably not.

    • What price ID security? Yeah, you’re right, probably not that much. :)

    • But it’s not secure. This won’t prevent someone from stealing the passport and the case, just from lifting the information remotely. RIFD cases are definitely useful for helping to protect from a remote sniffer, but there are plenty of more cost effective solutions on the market.

    • Yes, I know. I was agreeing with you. All it takes is a good hammer and a strong set of cutters.
