We all know by now that we need to stay 1-2 meters away from other people outside of our home. Social or physically distancing is an important aspect of keeping us all safe and healthy. But if you’re out for a walk or run, you need to be even further than that according to a new study.
The reason for this is that when a person walking or running sneezes or coughs, they leave their germs behind them in a sort of slip stream which leaves their droplets just in the air, waiting for you. This is an effect that carries along through any movement. Walking, running, biking, etc.
Getting out for a little work out has been a popular way of coping and the researchers aren’t suggesting people stop. Only that they keep further distance between themselves and others for safety reasons. The distance suggested is 4-5 meters for running to and 10-20 meters for biking, less for slow, more for fast. Stay safe!
