Every day millions of tons of fresh food is spoiled and wasted through faulty or inadequate cooling. Power cuts, dodgy generators and fuel poverty make it extremely hard to guarantee stable cooling in very hot countries. Now French company Koolboks has launched the Koolhome Solar Freezer, which provides reliable, low cost freezing for consumers and small business owners in Nigeria and other African countries.
The freezer uses a twin energy source. Solar panels on the roof of the building, plus a Lithium battery and what the company calls ‘ice energy storage’. The result is a freezer which can keep food fresh for up to four days even without full sunlight or a reliable mains power supply. What makes this product even more valuable is the fact that it’s being marketed on a low cost ‘pay as you go’ basis, using a SIM card meter. This means you can pick up a freezer kit for as little as $20 a month, which compares very favourably with generator fuel prices for running a conventional freezer.
The freezer comes with twin USB sockets for powering up devices like smartphones, plus two LED lightbulbs. So in effect giving the owner a 3 in one benefit for their business. The product also features 10cm thick insulation instead of the standard 6cm of normal freezers, which makes for even more efficiency.
