Learn how to properly clean out your dusty computer

When was the last time you cleaned out your computer? No, I’m not talking about deleting unnecessary items and defragging the hard drive. Rather, I’m talking about actually opening it up and getting rid of all of the dust that’s been building up in there. I’ve seen some pretty disgusting computers in my time as a technician, and after a while, all of that buildup can start to cause problems. That’s why you should clean it out on a regular basis.

If you’re lazy, you can just take off the side panel and use a can of compressed air until you’re content. However, you should really try to do a thorough job, making sure areas like the CPU heatsink/fan are free of dust. If not, it means that they aren’t able to properly dissipate heat, which is very bad for your PC. Over at HowToGeek, they’ve got a nice writeup on how to clean out your computer, and even organize the cables while you’re at it.

  • Wow…can't even think of the last time I cleaned my computer. (May explain its constant over-hearing…)
