When we watch TV or play games, we tend to be doing so in the evening in a dark room. This is obviously not improving your eyesight, as you’re putting your pupil through an overly strenuous workout. It’s a good idea to have ambient lighting around to make things easier for your eyes to process, but you don’t want to ruin the immersion from a lamp or room light being on.

The Lightpack wants you to see and experience whatever is on your screen without damaging your peepers. It’s an open-source lighting system that sticks to the back of your monitor or TV, and gives you ambient light based off of what’s on your screen. It’s a bit reminiscent of the Illumiroom projector, but it doesn’t cover the entire room.

This was made specifically to widen the field of vision for your display, so you don’t have to strain your eyes. What’s awesome is that it’s plug-and-play, which means only about 15 minutes to set it up, and you can tweak it as you see fit (alerts for messages, timers, etc). It’ll cost you $80 for one, which includes the Prismatik software. If you feel as though this would be a better DIY project, they put everything online so you can make one and use it as you see fit. When I say everything, I mean the firmware source codes, software, and PCB layouts. Below is a demo of the software:
