Make a phone-line powered flashlight for when the power goes out

Whenever the power goes out, I tend to reach for my phone to use as a temporary flashlight. I then begin the hunt for real flashlights and candles. Unfortunately, I rarely remember to purchase candles and batteries when I’m at the store, so I usually have to ride out the storm with almost no light. Wouldn’t it be great if you had a light that would work, even if the power was off, and didn’t require batteries? Believe it or not there is a way to do this, using your phone line of all things.

As we all know, phone lines operate independently of your power lines. This means that most of the time, your landline phone will still work, even if nothing else in the house does. Well, in order for your phones to work, it needs to be sending a small amount of power to them. You can build a small LED lamp that will harness this power for lighting in a pinch. There is a great Instructables guide for constructing one of these. Just bear in mind that the power output is very low, and your phone company may frown on you for using their line in this way.
