MangaHigh – who said math has to be boring?

mangahigh3

If there’s one thing guaranteed to scare most school children to their core, it’s the thought of doing another math test. All that trigonometry, algebra, equations and other implements of torture, and just one small brain to deal with it.

Well apparently it doesn’t have to be that way, and the clever folk at MangaHigh.com have come up with a cunning plan to make math actually enjoyable. We hear your gasps of surprise.

The site was built by a team of game specialists and mathematicians, and the clever part about the tech is the fact that it’s designed to adapt dynamically to the ability of the student. This means the student should be able to proceed at a pace which is perfect for their development needs, neither pushing too fast or lagging behind.

The range of math topics covered go from simple basics all the way up to quadratic equations, probability and scatter charts, and each section comes with a suitable interactive game which is designed to teach without pressure. There are medals to be won, scores to count and levels to beat, so there’s plenty to challenge the enquiring mind.

The service is free to use, and is aimed at schools, which gives math teachers a useful tool to encourage extra learning by the students. There is also a rather cool global competition feature on the site which pits schools from different countries against each other, with trophies and points prizes for the winner. The contests last for 24 hours each over a period of days.

All in all, this is an excellent resource for anyone involved in the process of teaching or learning mathematics from the ground up. As with all gamified educational resources it’s bound to appeal to the more geeky elements, so there’s a natural selection bias, but even so the idea is very valuable and this implementation is excellent. The interface is appealing and there’s enough depth in the games and sections to encourage maximum participation.
