There are some things which are so very useful, and yet not exciting and when you find them you think…oh yes. One such initiative is this Maps Icon project which is one man’s delivery of free map icons for every country in the world. Not only that, but he has created them in a range of 11 sizes from very tiny to huge.

The images are supplied in PNG format with transparent backgrounds, and even the largest of them (1024px) only takes up around 12kb. Not every country is represented, he’s left out the very tiny ones like Micronesia, but even so it’s a totally amazing amount of work and dedication to hand produced these for the world to benefit. Perfect for projects where you need to drop in a country representation, alongside or maybe instead of a flag.
