The Maxell folk are the ones who brought cassette tape to the world for which we are eternally grateful, and ever since then they have been trying to make a name for themselves in various consumer tech products. As well as storage media and computer peripherals they also do audio visual devices, and the latest of these is the Maxell Digital 2.1 Surround Soundbar TV Speaker , a 2.1 surround sound system for your TV.
It’s flat, curvy and comes at a great price, but to be honest I wasn’t too sure what to expect from this product.
I’m a huge movie fan and gamer and already own a 5.1 surround sound system, so any product that attempts to compete with my current set up has its work cut out. Nevertheless I was quite pleasantly surprised with the results of my test, as you can see in the video below.
Sound. The Soundbar reproduces a decent quality bass response in surround sound mode. OK, I admit, it’s nowhere near the bass thump of a 5.1 dedicated sub-woofer…but the product is pretty darn good for the ultra low price tag.
Connectivity. You can plug in up to 3 devices using HDMI in and then HDMI out to your TV. I loved how quickly it auto switched between my Games consoles and TV, which means it also doubles up as a cool HDMI switch.
The result? I tested the Soundbar with some of my favorite movies and games to see how it performed and surprisingly it sounded very good, with decent bass and no nasty buzzing or vibrations.
So why should you buy this? If you’re after adding a more cinematic feel to your current home TV and film experience or perhaps want to feel more engaged with your games, then I would thoroughly recommend purchasing this unit.
For audio buffs out there, you’ll know that £100 won’t buy you a complete cinema surround sound experience, so keep saving your pennies for something that will satisfy your greater needs. However, for the average family to improve their Friday home film night, it’s a great investment.
