MediaCrush – superb free open sourced hosting for video, images and audio

mediacrush

We love open source, and especially when it’s wrapped around something ultra cool like this new media hosting service called MediaCrush. The service offers something a little different from traditional media hosting, and because it’s open source there’s a growing community getting involved which is a good sign for the future.

The key component is the automatic conversion of GIF images to HTML5 video on upload. This has two benefits – first it makes them more compact with the result that they load much faster. You can see an example of the results on the site itself.

Because there’s no sign up needed, uploading is a snap. Just drag the file you want to host onto the box (or click on the box/select or copy/paste the file etc) and the file uploads quickly and instantly.

What’s more the results page gives you the file link, plus an embed code and a player, which gives instant access to the file contents once they have the link address (e.g. https://mediacru.sh/cKQBU26SoCh5 – music by Kevin MacLeod).

It’s elegant and very professionally done. To add icing on the cake there are also a bunch of apps for Windows, browsers (incl a Firefox addon) and Linux. As well as a mobile version. The developers plan to maintain a totally free service for ever, and make their money from offering special support and hosting services to people who need extra power and/or flexibility in their media hosting.

So it looks like a win-win, and one things for sure, this is a service which will catch on fast. It’s got all the ease of use you need, along with a pleasantly sophisticated engine, and certainly we can see all sorts of uses for hosting video and audio tracks on the fly.

Definitely one for the toolbox.
