Ever seen a bird and wondered what it was? You probably know the major species but some of the little ones all look the same. The Merlin Bird ID App will help you identify whether that was a finch or a sparrow you just saw.
The Merlin is an app focused on identifying our feathered friends. Currently it only works for North America and has 400 birds that it can recognize. You answer a series of questions about your location and the general information about what the bird was doing and it spits out a series of pictures of what the most possible matches are.
This app was built on crowdsourced science. It relies on the 70 million observations from the eBird project. The more you use it, the more it will learn. Once you’ve identified your bird, it will then give you more information including calls and habits so you can go from a beginner birdwatcher to the next level, all with your smartphone. The Merlin Bird ID App is unfortunately only for North America at this time but it is free.
