Mippin – the Ferret is mobilized…

Mippin

I’ve just started using Mippin to format and deliver our content in a mobile phone friendly way. I succumbed because it’s a total cinch to implement (there’s even a WordPress plugin) and I think it adds value by making our stuff much easier to read and access on every type of mobile phone. But don’t take my word for it. Give it a try please – go to www.redferret.net on your phone and it’s all done automatically – and let me know what you think. Good or bad. I’m a caring, listening Ferret, see?

  • Sorry, had to give it the “thumbs down”. I’m sure it’s handy for use on a regular mobile, but there are two issues:

    1. Can’t select to see the real page. I have a PocketPC device with a big screen and a fast wireless data connection, so I would prefer the normal redferret.net in most cases. Since the redirect is automatic and can’t be bypassed, I can only get the predigested version. Maybe you could redirect https://www.redferret.net/mob to Mippin? On the separate article pages, the Google Mobile “original version” is pretty close, but the “full version” just redirects to the Mippin-ized main page.

    2. Links don’t work right. If I try to open a specific article using the URL (e.g., https://www.redferret.net/?=p11131), it redirects to the Mippin-ized main page. Might be related to the “full version” issue in #1.

On the plus side, it is wicked fast. I just don’t like being forced to a watered-down “mobile” homepage without a prompt or means of getting to the original version, or when trying to view specific content.

  • Mmm…that’s good feedback Simon, thanks very much. I was also wondering about the fact that there’s no ‘opt out’ feature, so you’re stuck with it. But I figured that if the result was OK, that wouldn’t be a problem.

Hmm…let me ponder on it. If anyone else has any views, chime in.

  • I like how streamlined and fast it is. My screen may be large enough to handle more information, but I think this provides exactly the right amount.

  • Hello

Simon is right but it was a bug which has been fixed. Please upgrade to V1.2 of the plugin which resolves the issue. Once the upgrade is in place when you see original sotry you will be able to see the web version. Alternatively you can then add a url parameter of noloop=1 to any url to see the original page.

eg https://www.redferret.net/?=p11131&noloop=1 will show the web-based original page.

Thanks for everyone’s patience with this.

    Robin of Mippin.

  • Thanks Robin, that’s good to know.

  • Thanks Robin, that's good to know.

  • Looks great on my iPhone BUT, I hate that when I create a webClip for it I have to use a Mippin icon instead of the ferret one. That’s really lame!
    Otherwise good.

  • Just a quick note that I tried it on my Sony Ericsson W960i and it looks pretty nice. Can you make the ‘read’ button coloured, so it’s easier to see what’s a link and what’s not?

  • I am using Blackberry Bold on Smartone in Hong Kong, tried the URL but comes up with HTTP Error 400: Bad request.

THe server could not understand the page request, or was unable to process it for some reason.

Pity as I was looking forward to using the phone to access the website.
