Mopay, the cell phone graveyard – how fast the mighty fall

Mopay2

Mopay is a mobile phone recycling service which buys unwanted handsets and sells them on to developing nations while donating a sum to charity. Nothing particularly new there, but what is interesting is just how fast your precious handset can plummet in price.

A quick search on the site, for instance, shows that the Nokia E61 handset, barely 16 months old, is worth just £55.10 in working condition and £27.55 non-working. Blackberry Pearl? £37.50. I’ll be watching this site carefully post 29 June.

Oh, and apparently there are around 1700 handsets thrown away every hour in the UK alone. Wow!
