NEW BenQ W1050 – How Good Does it Look on a DIY Projector Screen? [REVIEW]

A projector setup costs a hell lot of money and buying a projector alone doesn’t grant you the full experience… Or does it?

In the video I’ll show you a DIY option on how to get the best experience on the BenQ W1050 without buying a projection screen (+200$ and a soundbar +250$). Which means you can save like 500$!! I just found a scrap wooden plate in my house which has a white background and is a bit shiny. It can’t be too shiny so pay attention! You can find a wooden plate like that for around 10$ in your local DIY store.

I didn’t mount it on a wall or something, but used two old tripods I had laying around. Just put them on the right height and balance the board on the two tripods and the wall. With the vertical keystone correction I could correct the stance of the video.

The sound on the projector is pretty silent, so I used a Bluetooth box with audio input I had laying around. The projector has an Audio out so it worked perfect! All around it took me about 10 minutes to install everything and the only thing which costs a lot of money was the projector. But you can’t project something in HD if you don’t have a projector. Unless your a magician or something…

There are offcourse a lot of other ways to do this. I saw a lot of DIY-videos where people built a projection screen with wooden plates and white towel for example. But I don’t have a workshop and can’t mount a screen to my wall as you could see in the video. I could’ve used a white sheet, nailed it on my wall and let it hang, but it would have a lot of wrinkles.

Pros

  • You can have a 100″ screen from a distance of just 2.8 meters
  • different modes to projects – ranging from projection mode to video colour
  • multiple inputs, two HDMI’s
  • pretty silent for a projector
  • very flexible in use
  • power saving technology to save the lamp
  • Very high contrast and very bright – super sharp quality
  • vertical keystone correction for when the screen is not straight
  • It remembers your last settings even after you plugged it out

Cons

  • Volume is very low
  • Still a lot of money – but that’s always the case for a projector
  • Gets warm, but has a decent cooling system
  • there’s a fixed minimum screen size – which is already pretty big

Conclusion

I initially thought projecting something wouldn’t look as good as on the television, because we always had a projector in school. That looked very bad. I was WRONG! The W1050 looks A M A Z I N G! I was really impressed by the quality, design and versatility of the projector. It’s a bit of fooling around to get the board up and stuff to project, but when it’s done, it’s an amazing experience! The W1050 retails for around 650$.
