New gadget helps paralyzed patients to move again

If this works, I want to know where it is and how much. There are a lot of people out there that have terrible spinal injuries that have paralyzed them. There is a new system out there that has the ability to train your brain to move muscles again. It’s a pocket-sized electric stimulator that will fire up your muscles and hopefully get some coordination back in the affected areas. By attaching this stimulator to the paralyzed limb, you can now hopefully get some motor function back.

“This study proves that by stimulating peripheral nerves and muscles, you can actually ‘retrain’ the brain,” says the study’s lead author, Dr. Milos R. Popovic, a Senior Scientist at Toronto Rehab and head of the hospital’s Neural Engineering and Therapeutics Team. What’s interesting is that six months after the initial round of tests, a number of them still had improved motor functions.

If these devices work as well as the study makes it sound, this could be a huge help to the millions out there who have limited motor functionality.
