Novel Bacteria Eats Oil – may help clean up spills

Bacteria is really having a moment! A new study has shown that novel bacteria in the ocean can reduce oil contamination. Which is great news because we can’t seem to stop having oil spills which, as I’m sure you are aware, are very harmful to environment.

The bacteria adapted to this food source. They usually nom down on gas that occurs naturally in the ocean. There aren’t many of them around but during times where there is a lot of food available, like when there’s an oil leak, their numbers increase.

Scientists thought they could be a bit more proactive with this bacteria and use it to help clean up spills with other. With the use of this bacteria they may be able to clean up massive oil spills, faster and more efficiently.
