Off The Grid – living eco style during Earth Week

Offthegrid

As part of Earth Week, Steven Leckart of the very excellent DVICE site is attempting to live and work using only renewable energy sources like sunlight and…well…sunlight. It’s a great idea and something that we should all take note of, even if we live in cloudier climes than the C of A.

One of the really interesting things I learned recently was that solar power is way ahead of the game in terms of efficiency and power delivery over the lifetime of the product. No other tech comes close when you consider things like wear and tear, maintenance and all the other perils that can afflict tech gear. Solarvoltaic cells are fit and forget, no wind or wave turbine breakdowns, no complex infrastructure. The Sharp Solar people I talked to told me that they have installations which are 20 years old and still happily delivering power in everyday use on conventional rooftops across the UK.

Anyway, here’s part two of the report from Steven. Verdict so far – not so easy.

[Update: of course, silly me, Joel is doing this too, only the realy hard way!]
