Okidokey – your phone as [an expensive] door key

okidokey

If there is one class of products which has us quite confused, it’s the electronic door lock and key. For one thing, they tend to be as ugly as sin, and for another just as expensive. They also seem to be rather insecure and worse, vulnerable to power or battery failure.

Nevertheless more and more of these products are hitting the shelves, including the Okidokey (geddit?) system, which connects any Bluetooth smartphone and the user installed lock. For opening doors and suchlike.

Actually the locks work with more than just Bluetooth phones, and will open for the right keychain tag, wristband or wallet card, so they’re pretty flexible. Unfortunately the main lock unit which contains the electronics is still rut ugly, and while the remote notifications of access is useful, we’re still not convinced about the whole genre. Especially when prices start at $189. Ah well, that’s progress.
