Open Meetings – open source conferencing software

Openmeetings

Open Meetings is a free open source program which comes with all the stuff you need for maintaining your own web conferencing system. The interface is rather Teutonically Spartan [huh…? – Ed] but it looks as though the software will get the job done. If you don’t have friends you’re going to find it tough to test out, but the demo is worth a look anyway.

You can run conferences with up to 16 people with audio and video, or an event with up to 200 people where only the organiser can present via audio and video (the others are viewers) so it has some coolness attached. There’s also a useful scheduling feature built in so you can set up meetings in advance. The icing on the cake is the recording function, which lets you save archives of all your best meetings to drool over in the comfort of your own fantasy.

If I sound less than awesomeized it’s because the whole presentation is very..um..sparse, very little concession to helping the less than geeky user easily assimilate the package. Which is a shame. With just a teeny bit of design smarts and a dedicated website with some polish, the whole project would come across as so much more use-me friendly.

Any time I see something like…

Unpack it to $RED5-HOME/webapps/ your new folder structure will be $RED5-HOME/webapps/openmeetings/ this is the base directory of OpenMeetings (following $OPENMEETINGS-HOME)”

…I know there’s a bunch of engineers in charge, and life won’t be as smooth and silky as it could be. Anyone remember early WordPress? Anyway I’m quibbling, it’s open source, so that’s just about glorious in itself.
