Remember the hole in the ozone layer? It was a big deal in the 80s and 90s. Such a big deal that nations signed the Montreal Protocol and agreed to stop producing chemicals that were destroying the ozone. Well it’s been 33 or so years since that went into effect and good news, the ozone layer has made a come back.
Specifically the hole above Antarctica has recovered which has actually reduced some weather effects of the jet stream. This is great news! It means that for some places, like Australia, they could see less drought and more rains. This does not mean that the climate crisis is over however, the rising greenhouse gases are still a threat.
But what this does show is that large scale action and commitment can make a great change for the paths our planet is going down and also that life can continue without those things that are dangerous to our vital environmental systems. Some good news and food for thought for us all.
