Photonic Fence – solving the mosquito problem with lasers

Mosquitoes are not just an annoyance, in some parts of the world they carry very deadly diseases. The Photonic Fence is a concept that aims to stop the mosquito borne diseases where they start by killing the carriers.

This gadget can identify a mosquito, specifically a female mosquito, which are the ones that bite humans, by its shape, size, and wing beat. Once it’s got a target, it shoots a laser and kills it. It will not shoot at other insects or humans, just female mosquitoes.

This is an interesting concept and it claims that it will not disrupt the ecological system, which is why wide spread pesticides are not considered a viable long term option for dealing with this issue. The Photonic Fence can also be programmed to track other insects or used to learn more about their habits. An interesting device that may prove useful if brought out of the concept stage.

  • Mosquitoes are a vital part of the diet of various other animals. Wipe out all the female mosquitoes and you lose a lot of biodiversity.

    • Agreed. But man, they’re annoying. :)
