PinPoints – cool and useful way to locate the nearby where

PinPoints is a very cool mobile phone application which lets you find and transmit a location, address or business to your handset as an instant landmark . The service uses Google maps as the focal point for the web search, but you can search and send addresses from your email client or web browser once you’ve installed the right PinPoint tool (yes, there’s a Firefox plugin!).

This kind of application clearly makes top use of GPS enabled phones, and it sure beats having to laboriously type in addresses every time. You can also send locations to your friend or family mobile phones as long as they’re registered for the service, which again makes it super easy to set up meetings and stuff.

Once it reaches your phone as a landmark, you treat it just like a normal GPS POI (point of interest) and show it on the map in your handset, route to it, etc. It works on most Windows and Symbian handsets which have GPS on-board, and the iPhone.

This looks like a great tool for saving time and making optimum use of your GPS enabled cell. The only caveat is the fact that it’s clearly in beta, and there’s no knowing what the charges are likely to be. It works internationally though, so it could be great for finding a local pizza bar in a strange city, how much is that worth on a subscription? Lovely.

Launched in 2008 allows you to search for a location and send it to a mobile phone. It works with GPS smartphone like the Nokia N95, N82 etc. Windows Mobile 6 devices and of course iPhones. The team is based in Limerick and Dublin.

  • I use the service myself – it's great & it's free.
