PlantNet – help scientist identify plants [FREEWARE]

PlantNet

I’m not a botanist. That’s why I write for Red Ferret and not Plant Life Daily or something. So like most people who aren’t into plants, I’m not sure which ones have the word “poison” in their names. Luckily, there’s an app for that. PlantNet is an app developed to help people identify plants from pictures.

This app was developed by scientists in part to help keep biodiversity alive and well on the planet. But it will also help the non-scientist figure out what that weird flower is that’s growing on the side of their house. It does this by comparing photographs to identify what plant is what. So you don’t have to type in any long descriptions or anything like that.

It doesn’t work with plants that you can buy. The focus is on wild plants, native to the area. Right now the app is only in France but as more people continue to add plants from other places, they will continue to update the app and expand to more places. PlantNet is a free app for both Android and iPhone.
