Plastic Eating Enzymes – not science fiction

Plastic pollution is a big problem. It would be great if it could be broken down into something harmless that could be reused in other products or at least into less harmful. Two young scientists have zeroed in on a solution that turns it into CO2 and water.

The two scientists, Miranda Wang and Jeanny Yao have created a process that breaks down plastics into manageable compounds that can then be used in other manufacturing. It begins by dissolving the plastic in a solvent and then it is introduced to an enzyme that breaks it down more. This process can take as little as 24 hours to complete.

The idea can help clean up existing trash as well as handle future loads. Although using less plastic is the goal, eliminating it completely is a difficult and long task. That and the fact that we will likely always need plastic for some things in our lives. This is still under development but seems promising.
