Polybrowser – the world’s first panoramic web browser? [Freeware]

Just when we thought we’d seen it all, along comes a new basic tool which manages to surprise us. A little. If you’ve ever wondered why there’s no sideways scrolling web browser on the market, wonder no longer because it’s now arrived. Polybrowser is a multi-platform browser which is designed for people who do serious multi-tasking and need more oomph from their web tools.

The browser was originally funded through a Kickstarter campaign, based on the premise that you can hold all your websites open on one page and just scroll sideways to see them all. You may ask, as we did, how this is different from just having sites open in multiple tabs. And we don’t really have an answer for that.

What we will say, is the search and view functionality is quite interesting. Do a search in the far left sidebar and you get an instant view of the results in the main pane, which you can also scroll sideways along, to see multiple results at once. It’s certainly different, and interesting, but we’d have to put a stopwatch on it to see if it actually made a huge difference over tabs.

One cool thing is the software is compatible with Firefox add-ons, so you’ve immediately got a bunch of extras you can bolt on to give you more power and flexibility, which is great. The fact that it’s available for Mac, Windows and Linux is also a bonus, but we reckon the real power of the tool will show on touchscreen devices like tablets, where sliding right and left may well be faster than hitting tab buttons. For now, we’re sitting on the fence on this one, but even so it’s worth taking a look for yourself to see if you’re more convinced.
