What happens to the garbage you put on the corner? Gets picked up once or twice a week and it’s gone from your life forever. What if it could be be put to a a good use? Like powering you home? That’s the vision of the new power plant in Portland Port. It runs on trash.
The energy recovery facility doesn’t quite exist yet but if completed will be able to power 30K homes with trash that is collected from the local area. The plant could process 180K tons of trash, turning it to fuel, every year.
Building it would also provide a host of construction jobs and then a handful of permanent jobs thereafter. Plants like this won’t solve issues with pollution, the answer is still creating far less waste and being more mindful with the waste that we do create. Better disposal methods are not an answer for mindful consumption.
