PowerUp 3.0 – fold it, launch it, fly it…with your phone

powerup3b

We tend not to feature Kickstarter projects until they’ve ended, but we couldn’t resist this puppy. From the same people which brought us the rubber band powered paper plane, comes an absolute cracker of an idea.

The PowerUp 3.0 is a small kit which you embed into a standard fold up paper airplane, at which point it turns into a full remote controlled aircraft, which you fly with your smartphone. Genius.

The whole thing runs via Bluetooth (the low power kind) and has a range of 180 feet, which is plenty enough to do tricks and swirls. You get 10 minutes of flight from a USB charge, and the kit is crash proof and incorporates a carbon fiber frame, and an ingenious rudder which turns with a flick of your wrist.

The kit is compatible with both iOS and Android, and to say they smashed through their Kickstarter funding is an understatement. They’re currently sitting at around $780,000 (they asked for $50,000) with 32 days still left to run. Unreal.

It looks as though the final product will retail for around $30 or so, and you can still pre-order on the project site at around those prices. Very cool tech, let’s hope it works as well as it looks.
