Recording Contact Lenses – Sony wants to be the camera right in your eye

Contact lenses that do more than just correct our sight are a innovation that many companies are working on. Smart contacts are a science fiction dream and developers are interested in using them for augmented reality but not Sony. Sony wants to give us contacts that can record video.

The company was awarded a patent that would let the wearer control their contacts with blinks so that they could record video on request. A series of sensors would be able to detect which blinks were meant to control the camera and which were just the normal type of blinks. The image capture technology would be on the lens around the iris and it would be powered by energy created from the movement of the eye.

This sounds amazing but it’s a long way off. Current technology is not even close to being small enough to put into a contact lens that someone could wear. Still, an awesome idea, just don’t expect it anytime soon.
