Recycling Isn’t The Answer – plastic waste is ending up in landfills anyway

This is a message for the North American readers out there: Recycling will not solve our plastic problem. This seems like a strong statement but it’s true. Most of what you think you’re recycling just ends up in a landfill somewhere else and that’s . . not helping anything.

Part of this is our fault. In order to be recycled, plastic has to fit very strict guidelines and many people it seems were not following those which led to China ending it’s agreement for recycling with us. What we do ship out now tends to end up in open air landfills which means it goes into the environment.

So with recycling out what can you do? For starters, think about reducing. It’s hard to cut every plastic in your life but thing like buying in bulk, reusable cups, and taking your own bags can help. Reuse what you can. Shopping bags, containers, etc. Every little bit counts.
