Rimac Electric Concept One – this 0-60 in 2.8 seconds, 373 mile range, 1 hour rapid charge supercar is no April Fool…or is it?

We thought it might be fitting to feature another product today which sounds like it should be foolish, but actually might see the light of day as a proper product for sale. The Rimac Electric Concept One car is a stylish electric supercar from a young Croatian entrepreneur Mate Rimac, which promises some fantastic specifications.

The car features not one, but four separate electric motors, one on each wheel, outputting a total of 1088 hp, which makes it ridiculously powerful. The specs claim a 0 – 60 in 2.8 seconds, and a top speed of 190 mph (limited), but who’s actually going to test that out on a wet high street run to the supermarket?

The use of four motors also apparently allows for something called All-Wheel Torque Vectoring, which basically means the driver can configure the car to produce understeer or oversteer depending on their desire and driving skills. Sounds fab.

The company plans to produce only 88 cars, each one selling for around $980,000, so it’s definitely not going to be suitable for Aunt Marge unless she’s just written a best seller. We’re sure they’ll find a market somewhere though, if only in the Middle East and China.

The most amazing specification is the 373 mile range, which clearly suggests some hefty battery technology in there somewhere. And so it is, with a 1400 cell LifePO4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery pack with liquid and Freon gas cooling supplying the power and range.

The vehicle is constructed of carbon fiber, which delivers an impressively lean weight of 1950 kgs. All in all, the car seems to be pretty amazing, and with an impressively amazing price too of course. But we do wonder if any of this ultra high tech will ever reach the level of the consumer chariot, or whether we will be doomed to travel around in Lithium or diesel powered steel and iron buckets for eternity.
