Rockbox – open source replacement firmware for your MP3 player

Rockbox

Rockbox is open source firmware which you can install on your MP3 player to replace the proprietary stuff already on there. Why? Well, it’s written ‘by users, for users’ and aims to provide a higher quality audio experience, plus customisability and plugins. For example some of the cool features include gapless playback, a spoken word interface and Doom! support.

Sounds excellent methinks. Of course your warranty will wing its way out the window once you install the code, but hey, it’s the stuff revolutions are made of, right? Currently it supports Apple iPods, Archos, iRiver, SanDisk, Toshiba and other players. From where we’re sittting anything that offers a user community and plugins is very cool indeed.

Rockbox is an Open Source replacement firmware for portable digital audio players…We are not violating anyone’s copyright and we are not circumventing any copy protection scheme. This has been a big point for the project since its inception…Do I have to open my player to use Rockbox? No, everything is done in software, you can put down the screwdriver.
