Sada Bike – hubless, elegant and folds to the size of an umbrella

Every since the dawn of the age of the wheel, people have been trying, mostly unsuccessfully, to improve upon the basic design. Similarly with derivatives such as the bicycle. So we’re not surprised to find that an enterprising Italian engineering student has also decided to have a go. But with typical Latin flair.

Of course the Sada Bike is only a prototype at the moment, and the design as demonstrated raises almost as many questions as it answers. How do you brake? What do you do with the wheels when you’ve folded it down? How do you get rid of the mud and dirt when you’re folding. And so on.

But we have to give the project 10 points for producing something which looks genuinely innovative, and pretty cool actually. The project is currently seeking financial backers (maybe it will go the crowdfunding route?) and the developer Gianluca is clearly supported by some clever people, judging by the quality of the website and press attention. We’ll see how it turns out in practice.

  • I’d like to see a road stress test with some accident avoidance maneuvers. I’m concerned about the way the front wheel his held at the top. Sudden evasive maneuvers might break that hold. Also, with the sprocket powering the rear wheel at the bottom, I wonder about the top speed that can be achieved comfortably. Additional gears might be nice. But, yes, it is beautiful.

  • The only problem with this design, is where the heck do you put the baseball cards so they make that motorcycle noise? No spokes :(
