Samsung Finally Releases Official Repair Parts For Galaxy Phones

Well it looks as though the constant legal pressure is starting to pay off. Samsung is the latest mega-manufacturer to announce a DIY repair option for some of their smartphones. Samsung Self Repair, which is being run in collaboration with ifixit.com, will now provide spare parts for repairing screens, back glass and charging ports. No news on replacing batteries alas, but any news is good news when it comes to DIY repairs for electricals.

The great thing about the collaboration is the fact that iFixit already has a reputation and know-how on self repair, so you’ll also be able to buy specific tool kits to help you dismantle your precious device without mangling it to death. As someone who has successfully defeated water damage in a Nintendo Switch by buying a few bits on eBay, this is a wonderful way to feel good about your contribution to landfill evasion. We definitely need to stop buying so much, and start repairing more.

The spare part offer is US only at the moment, and only for a few Galaxy phone models, but hopefully it will spread internationally very soon. And hopefully in the meantime some enterprising folks will start reselling on eBay as needed.

Anyhoo, here’s a short video to give y’all a little inspiration.
