Sanity Claws II…

Samsung. The company was showing off a few of its new products at the multi vendor press show I attended a few days back, including the SP-50L7 50″ DLP projection television. The brochure picture above doesn’t do it justice (dufus here forgot to take a snap), as it’s really quite a nice looking product.

Not as crystal sharp as a big LCD, and with a slightly narrower viewing angle and still pricey at 3500.00, but for that size screen probably a better investment than a plasma. Each television contains 2,000,000 little mirrors on a chip by the way, which is way too much bad luck if you break them.

OCWorkbench has a better shot of it from the launch last month in Singapore.

Also on the Samsung stand was the cute Syncmaster 730MP [Argentinian!]. This is a crisp little 17 inch LCD TV/monitor with onboard FM Radio, TV tuner, MP3 player, and a 5 in 1 memory card reader (you can just make out a small white card sticking out from the rear left of the picture). All for 399.00. Out in September here in the UK.

Toshiba was showing off its new Multimedia Center stackable module system, which is a set of USB 2.0 boxes which you can attach to a PC or laptop to add extra functionality. The two first modules on show were the Audio Hub with 5.1 Dolby decoder on board and the Giga Store hard drive box which will ship with a currently unspecified size of hard disk, plus integral 6 in 1 card reader. Two more modules are on their way – a satellite, terrestrial/cable television box with FM radio and a Hot Spot module with 802.11g on board and integrated ADSL modem.

Each box can be stacked on top of each other, connecting via a proprietary USB port, and should cost around 80.00 to 90.00 each. Interesting concept, available from November. I have a nagging feeling, though, that the company is still not really sure what kind of a company it wants to be in the new millennium.

Finally, Iomega proudly presented, and I again stupidly didn’t photograph – only excuse is that I was not carrying around my Exilim for once – its new Wireless NAS 100 box. Looking a little like the NAS200d pictured above (in that it is cube-like) the new product sports 802.11g, a 10/100 Ethernet port, two USB 2.0 ports and a 160GB hard drive for 330.00.

The suits were demonstrating it streaming video across the WiFi and also had an additional hard drive plugged in to a USB port to prove that it could act as a true Wifi hub. It’s launching next month and should be a big hit with small businesses wanting to add a cheap storage/Wifi hub onto their over-stretched networks. Oh and a 250GB model is 400.00.
