Santa Claus has never looked as lively as he does in these not-so-still images that create the illusion of movement where there is none.
Ol’ St. Nick might want to take it easy or he’s going to be too tired to deliver the toys on Christmas Eve. No, not really. The Santa Scanimation Book is tricking you a little bit, which means it would usually end up on the Naughty List but it’s all being done to spread a little Christmas cheer so the book still gets more than a lump of coal.
Santa isn’t really using the hula hoop or juggling candy canes or riding a unicycle but a new process known as Scanimation uses a state-of-the-art six-phase animation process that combines the “persistence of vision” principle with a striped acetate overlay to give the illusion of movement. Do we know what that actually means? Not really, but it’s still a lot of fun to watch.
The 24-page hardback book is available for $14.95.
