Public Interest Registry, the group responsible for the .org domain registry has been bought by a private equity firm. This could be disastrous for nonprofits that rely on the low price (less than $10 a year) that PIR maintained as now new management is sure to raise it.
They have not come forward with new price points but they have already changed their language surrounding any possible changes to be more ambiguous with promises to keep .org “reasonably priced”. What that means in real world terms is anyone’s guess.
Many groups have spoken out against this move and you can too. There’s a petition that you can add your name to in order to stop the sell. Check out the website to add your opposition.
