Scoutguard SG580M GSM Camera lets you photograph the wilds from your armchair

It’s taken a while, but the manufacturers are finally waking up to the idea that combining a cell phone SIM card with a static digital camera can result in some pretty cool products if you get creative. Wildlife cameras are nothing new, but the idea that you can set a camera in an extremely remote place and have it beam back images to your mobile phone is something that’s only now catching on, for both sport and security.

The Scoutguard SG580M is a GSM camera which takes a standard mobile phone SIM card, and marries it up to a 5 megapixel camera with extremely low power consumption. The result is a neat wildlife (or security) camera which you can set and forget for up to 3 months, before the batteries need changing.

The camera can be set to deliver images to either your phone or your email address, and it can also be set to text you as well. It supports SD memory cards up to 16MB in size, and features a full night-vision infra-red LED system for shooting in pitch dark. The images are full color, and the camera can also record audio.

As long as there’s a cellular signal (at least 3 to 4 bars) in the area, this puppy will send images anywhere across the world to your phone. We’re thinking that if you combine it with something like this Solar Charger for Wildlife Cameras you can have a permanent, never touch camera at your beck and call 365 days a year for as long as you want. The camera is priced at $328.95.
