Keeping track of receipts for business, or personal, purposes, is time-consuming especially if you run a home office, or you travel a lot on business. There are any number of financial packages out there for you to manage your money, both on and offline, but in general you will have to keep your physical treeware receipts somewhere safe and accessible for those pesky audit trails.

Shoeboxed is a TRUSTe certified secure online service which, in its free incarnation, will keep track of as many scanned and/or emailed receipts as you can upload. Various subscription plans entitle you to a mail-in service, where the Shoeboxers will scan your receipts for you on their equipment, and you can either request your receipts to be sent back to you or they’ll shred them.

Receipt data is automagically processed and summarised, at which point you can view, categorise or add detail to the receipt, perform some simple statistical analysis (e.g. spend rates by category/ online or offline purchasing/ data by week or month) and also export the results into a number of online and offline data formats, covering most common accounting software. The service has recently been extended to cover business cards too, with export to common contact database formats. Available internationally (although their country selection field on registration is annoyingly random) at different price points.
