Siku – the social media app made for and by Inuit people

Social media doesn’t serve every need for every community. It’s not one size fits all. The Siku app was created for and by Inuit people to help them hunt and live on the ice. It combines traditional knowledge with technology and to create an amazing resource.

The app was made to help with the needs of the people who spend their lives outdoors supporting their communities and families. The app itself is part social media, part weather app where users can create updates about the conditions of the landscape and animal tracks, as well as receive similar information.

This way, any hunter in the community has knowledge of what those before him have seen. Taking the oral tradition to the next level. Community based apps, made to serve specific spaces and meet specific needs are an amazing use of modern technology and there should be more of them.
