SleepServer – Lets PCs sleep and keep working

Image

Computer scientists at the University of California, San Diego, have created SleepServer, a software that lets PCs stay connected to the server while in sleep mode.

Sleep Saver software 1

This unique software places a virtual representation of the sleeping computer on the server, allowing for routine overnight tasks, and wakes the computer up at a pre-programmed time or when the server’s unable to complete something on its own. When a user places his/her computer in sleep mode, SleepServer activates. The virtual PC can do tasks like Voice over IP commands, instant messaging and peer-to-peer services, along with remote access to the PC via protocols like VPN, SSH encrypted connection and Remote Desktop.

Sleep Saver 4

Best of all, SleepServer has shown to produce an average energy savings of 60%, which can really add up for companies with large numbers of computers onsite. SleepServer is currently working on over 50 computers at UC San Diego’s computer science building and there are plans to expand its use campus-wide over the coming year. Some of the best ideas do come out of California, you know!

Reducing the electricity required to run our information technology infrastructure is an absolute must, and our SleepServer technology is an important step in this direction. … Our goal with SleepServer is to help buildings with heavy IT-loads reach net-zero energy use – so that these buildings effectively become carbon neutral by generating as much renewable energy as they consume.
