Computer scientists at the University of California, San Diego, have created SleepServer, a software that lets PCs stay connected to the server while in sleep mode.
This unique software places a virtual representation of the sleeping computer on the server, allowing for routine overnight tasks, and wakes the computer up at a pre-programmed time or when the server’s unable to complete something on its own. When a user places his/her computer in sleep mode, SleepServer activates. The virtual PC can do tasks like Voice over IP commands, instant messaging and peer-to-peer services, along with remote access to the PC via protocols like VPN, SSH encrypted connection and Remote Desktop.
Best of all, SleepServer has shown to produce an average energy savings of 60%, which can really add up for companies with large numbers of computers onsite. SleepServer is currently working on over 50 computers at UC San Diego’s computer science building and there are plans to expand its use campus-wide over the coming year.
