Slow Fiber Movement – move over fast fashion, hemp is coming for you

Fast fashion is terrible for the environment. Everyone needs clothing but we don’t need to all rely on businesses that sell mostly synthetic fibers with styles meant only to last a season. Instead, check out the crown jewels of the slow fiber movement, flax and hemp.

Flax and hemp have been used to make fiber for centuries. Pretty much as long as humans have been weaving. Both crops are preferable to cotton which takes a massive amount of water to cultivate and process.

If grown mindfully, these crops also act as excellent carbon sinks with the final product being better for the world over all than your general random t-shirt. For bonus points, these fibers grow all over the world can often be locally sourced. Although wearing linen isn’t exactly reasonable for every single activity, moving away from reliance on fast fashion and synthetic materials is a step towards more sustainable practices.
