We all know what smoke alarms look like – those round ugly devices that we stick up high on a wall or ceiling. Now Finnish designer Paola Suhonen has added some whimsy to this lifesaving tool.
Lento from Jalo Helsinki, is a photovoltaic smoke detector that resembles an attractive insect or art deco and features cutting-edge technology. Its entire surface acts as as a test button, so there are no push buttons. Also the external casing acts as a “press switch” to silence false alarms and test its performance.
Installation is a snap. No need for screws – it uses 3M tape instead so it only takes seconds to install. The Lento is available ion 5 colors and uses lithium-ion batteries that last five years. It’s not yet available in the U.S. but you can order it online for €23.92. Who wouldn’t want something fun like this hanging around! Definitely a conversation starter!
