Inspired by nature, this “ivy” is actually a series of small solar cells that are imprinted with conductive ink to resemble natural ivy. Designed to be placed on the outside of residential or commercial buildings, Solar Ivy is a combination of solar technology and piezoelectrics.

These man-made leaves can be bent to create curved or rigid shapes or mounted to contour the outer surface of a structure. Made from recycled and reclaimed materials, they not only absorb sunlight, they can act provide shade for a building, helping to reduce its energy usage and can also be used to create letters on a building.

Solar ivy comes in 3 types: organic which produces 0.5 watts each, amorphous silicon which produces 0.75 watts each, and a more energy efficient thin film which produces 4 watts of energy each. But these innovative solar cells aren’t inexpensive. They range from $18 to $23 per leaf. A hefty price at the outset but perhaps the energy savings will give a decent payback.
