Solayo – super cool meta music search engine

solayo

Our need for music seems to be insatiable, and no matter how many sources and resources we use, we still need more it seems. By now most people will know about the major sources on the Web, services like Spotify, Pandora and of course the amazing YouTube, but we’ve also reported on other smaller services like tuberadio.fm. Now there’s a new name to add to the list, and it’s rather cool.

Solayo is a meta music search engine, in that it doesn’t just search YouTube for music to play, but also takes in other sites such as Soundcloud and Dailymotion. This means you have more chance of finding that rare Peruvian nose flute punk band you’ve been looking for, and what’s more in stereo.

The interface is clean, although some clarity is lost because of the numerous little option icons dotted around the place, which tend to confuse the eye and make it difficult to focus on the important parts of the page. There’s both a main media search option as well as a radio feature, where you can simply click on a box and get a stream of whichever genre you’re into.

The radio is actually a conventional YouTube feed, so you’ll get the video playing in the top right of the screen, but the automated player is a nice touch as it nicely mimics an instant playlist with one click. Not only that, but you can do a fast drag and drop to alter the playing order. Nice!

Sign in to the service and you’ll get a typical user account, complete with a profile and integrated messaging app, and of course you’ll be able to follow other users and they’ll be able to follow you. How lovely. It’s all very nicely done, and there are things like shareable playlists which you can access from other users which can really help you discover new artists and music.

It’s all very professionally done, and while the interface can definitely do with some simplification here and there, the overall effect is not unpleasant. Maybe because it’s a light colored motif as default, or the fact that the fonts are nice and consistent. Definitely one worth checking out and worth a bookmark if you’re a music junkie.
