SOS Stay Safe – the smartphone app which could save your life with a simple shake

Life is not always a bowl of ripe cherries. Sometimes we can find ourselves in situations which are unpleasant at least and downright hazardous at worst. Although we now live in a time when the world is safer than it has ever been, personal safety is never far from our minds, especially if we are to believe all the doom and gloom in the daily news.

This new SOS Stay Safe Android app, inspired by the tragic recent events in India concerning assaults on women, aims to help ladies (and even gents) where they feel threatened, or in fact the worst has already happened.

The app works with just about any Android handset and is designed to send out a series of emergency alerts to recipients of your choosing once you give the phone a vigorous shake. The intensity of the shake is customized by you on install, and thereafter the handset will do the necessary if you shake it in a similar way at any time.

The app sends an automatic text SMS message and/or email to your chosen contacts with your name and a voice recording. It also sends a notification of your exact location using GPS and the battery level of your handset. The messages are sent discretely and at set times. The developers have aimed the product at those people who may feel like they’re being stalked late at night, attempted robbery or assault, hiking or camping situations or even kidnapping or attempted burglary at home.

Because the phone continues to send out alerts and locations after being triggered, it can be used to track you in the event you are trapped somewhere remote or being abducted, although a consideration must be the amount of battery life this will consume over time. This is probably why the battery level is sent as well, to let would be rescuers know how long they have before the alerts will cease.

All in all an interesting product, although it’s a shame it’s not free. Still $0.99 / £0.65 is a small price to pay for some added peace of mind. Android only at the moment.
