Splashtop Instant-On Computing – banishing boot-up blues for ever?

Splashtop

Splashtop is a new embedded Linux package which provides instant-on access to the Internet or Skype on any computer on which it’s installed. The product gets an official release on Wednesday, but here is a preview write up of the tech running on an ASUS P5E3 Deluxe motherboard which makes interesting reading.

The software bundles together a Skype client and badged Firefox browser which is accessed on power-on before the operating system. At that point you have a choice of whether to surf or call, or press a key to bring up the full O/S. This would be a great feature on a laptop, when often all you really want to do is make a quick call or do a Google search. Let’s hope that it gets adopted by more manufacturers soon. It’s ecological, gives people more exposure to Linux and offers a real world performance and user benefit. Bring it on!

With Splashtop your computer is ready to use seconds after you turn it on. Instead of waiting for a full boot, you have Web access in mere seconds. Chat, surf, play a game – all one click away…Splashtop is a secure Web-surfing environment. You can surf the Web while staying immune to many of the attacks that plague Windows…Splashtop boots so quickly there’s no reason to leave your PC on all the time. Now you can use your time more effectively, and consume much less energy.
