Sprint Drive First locks down your phone when driving

Yesterday we posted about a Bluetooth receiver that would allow you to do such things as compose emails and update Facebook without using your hands. Some people think that even this is far too much of a distraction. It’s true that anything that takes your focus off of the road, even a little, can reduce your awareness and increase your chances to get in an accident. Well Sprint recognizes this, and has decided to offer a service to remove your phone as a distraction while driving.

The new Drive First service can be installed on any Android device, and when it detects that you are in motion, it disables the phone. All calls are sent to voicemail, and texts are responded to with a default message stating that you are unavailable. Navigation features are really the only ones that will not be locked down when in motion. Granted, this does mean that if you are a passenger, your phone is also useless, which is a huge downside. Look for it sometime in the fall, with a $2 per month premium.

  • So how does it know that _you_ are the one driving? I gotta say, it would really piss me off if my phone shut down when I _riding_ in a taxi or as a passenger in someone else's car… Also, how long after you stop/start does it quit working? If you stop at a light, do you have to wait 5 mins before you can make/receive a call?
