There’s been no shortage of news about the rise and rise of 3D printed homes over the past few years. But now we have the first commericial real estate sale of one. In New York. no less. The SQ4D 3D printed house has been listed on Zillow.com for a hair under $300,000. Which is apparently less than half the price of its neighbours.  Of course we’re wondering whether being in the middle of a mega pandemic could have some effect, but there’s no doubt this is a watershed moment.

The 1500 sq foot home sits on 1/4 of an acre, features 3 bedrooms, and is built with concrete as the extrusion material. So it’s strong. Now while concrete per se is not the most eco of materials, this type of use could still make for a more carbon friendly construction than current alternatives.

The open plan building certainly looks pretty good at first sight. Nondescript but functional might be a good description. But it does come with a nice 50 year guarantee, and the cachet of being a world first. It will be interesting to see whether the mortgage companies will like it. The whole thing is built on-site using a rail robot type 3D printer, and uses the equivalent of around 10 gallons of gas per 500 foot of build. Zillow is calling it ‘a piece of history’, and who are we to argue? Story via.
